Things You’re Unlikely To See #6

spectacle wearer of the year 2015

Q. What’s the difference between hearing aids and glasses?

A. Aside from approx £3,500 per pair, nobody ever says “I like your new hearing aids” when you walk into a room.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Specsavers recently announced the winner of their Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition, but potential Hearing Aid Wearers of the Year are still waiting for their invitation to step forward. Go on, Specsavers, I’d love a holiday in the Bahamas and £10,000 to buy a pair of hearing aids that work…

Even if such a competition existed, we wouldn’t stand a chance.

Only cute kids and glamorous grannies wear hearing aids (and they are embarrassed about it).

I give you the latest Boots advert,

There’s an even worse one with Glamerous older lady dressed up to go out saying something like “let’s keep this between ourselves” as she pops in her invisible aids impossibly quickly.

I’d love to see the real life version where she drops them on the floor, then stands on them by accident while she’s searching for her invisible reading glasses.

My sister always found it hilarious when I went hunting for my spare glasses, so I could find my glasses.

*Poor husband, finds himself looking for both mine and my younger daughters glasses.

*however, I spend enough time looking for his belt, keys, wallet etc. not to be very sorry.

I am thinking of patenting enormous hearing aids with lots of sparkly bling so that people don’t forget I can’t hear them if they turn away from me while chatting …. I think the amount we rely on lip reading even with moderate amounts of hearing loss is underestimated ….. Can’t decide if flashing lights would be overkill though!

Yes hearing is hugely improved by wearing my glasses and hugely decreased by people wandering away, especially since our house is an extended cottage with two feet thick stone walls forming some of the doorways.

No Juliet, from personal experience flashing lights are not overkill and, for some persistently oblivious individuals, may still not be enough to remind them to talk to the face!

I love the irony that the ad to try to get us to buy hearing aids does not carry subtitles. Personally, I have no idea what happened in that ad, but it looks weirdly like it’s a video feed from the scope of the hit man’s sniper rifle as he tries to get a really good angle on her…

Perhaps the answer to people who turn away whilst talking is some form of intricate and not-quite-sure-if-it’s-as-rude-as-it-looks facial tattoo?
